Apprentice Bicycle Mechanic Intermediate Level 2 (GCSE)

We are seeking enthusiastic individual to join our Aztecs Bikes Family as an Apprentice Bicycle Mechanic. This apprenticeship is your ticket to becoming a skilled professional in the world of bicycle repair and maintenance.

• Assisting with Bike Inspections: You’ll start your day by assisting experienced mechanics in inspecting bicycles brought in for repairs. This involves assessing the condition of different components such as gears, brakes, wheels, and frames.
• Repairing and Servicing Bicycles: Once the inspections are complete, you’ll dive into repairing and servicing bicycles. This can include tasks like adjusting gears, replacing brake pads, truing wheels, lubricating chains, and fixing punctures.
• Assisting with Bike Builds: As an apprentice, you will be involved in assembling new bikes for customers. This includes attaching components, adjusting brakes and gears, and ensuring the bike is properly tuned and ready for use.
• Learning New Techniques: Throughout the week, you’ll have opportunities to learn new repair techniques and broaden your knowledge. This may involve attending training sessions, workshops, or watching demonstrations by experienced mechanics.
• Customer Interactions: You’ll have the chance to interact with customers, assisting them with inquiries, offering advice on bike maintenance, and discussing repairs or upgrades. Developing good communication skills and providing excellent customer service is an essential part of the role.
• Inventory Management: Keeping the workshop organised and well-stocked is important. You may be responsible for managing inventory, organising spare parts, and ensuring tools and equipment are properly maintained.
• Shadowing and Learning from Experienced Mechanics: One of the invaluable aspects of the apprenticeship is the opportunity to shadow and learn from experienced mechanics. You’ll observe their techniques, ask questions, and receive guidance as you work on various tasks.
• Maintenance and Cleaning: Keeping the workshop clean and well-maintained is crucial. You’ll be responsible for maintaining a clean work environment, including sweeping the floors, cleaning tools, and properly storing equipment.

 

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll gradually take on more responsibilities as your skills progress. The tasks assigned to you will become more complex, and you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wider range of bicycles and handle more challenging repairs.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Bicycle mechanic level 2.

This apprenticeship is set as follows:

• Cytech Technical Two (during months 5 to 7)
• Cytech Technical Three (during months 14 to 16)

The training will be carried out at the apprentice’s workplace. The remainder (two short block-release courses) is delivered at one of the four Cytech workshops in either Oxford, Guildford, Stafford or Darlington.

The apprenticeship is made up of twelve modules of learning – these will be delivered by blended learning using a combination of regular face to face and remote visits from your training officer/performance coach, e-learning; videos, case studies, personal study, employer led training and mentoring and two block release technical training courses at one of our designated Cytech workshops.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Senior Mechanic or Lead Technician: With experience and continued skill development, you can progress to a senior mechanic or lead technician role. In these positions, you’ll take on more complex repairs, mentor apprentices, and oversee the daily operations of the workshop. Your expertise and leadership skills will play a vital role in maintaining a high level of service and customer satisfaction.
