Deck Rating Apprentice Intermediate Level 2 (GCSE)

As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbor workboats to oceangoing support vessels, we provide world-class integrated maritime services in the UK & abroad. Our vessels provide a range of support, including dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery, & passenger transfers.

Duties will include;

Working as a member of the deck department on-board assigned vessels and performing security duties as directed by the vessel security officer/vessel master.  

Learning and performing watchkeeping duties during day or night shifts, both at sea. These duties will include keeping a lookout on a sea passage during daylight or darkness as required by the master. 

Perform housekeeping duties which may include cleanliness of own and passenger accommodation, stairways, and other areas of the vessel.

Day to day you’ll be involved in:

• Working as a member of the deck department on-board assigned vessels and performing security duties as directed by the vessel security officer/vessel master. 
•  Learning and performing watchkeeping duties during day or night shifts, both at sea. These duties will include keeping a lookout on a sea passage during daylight or darkness as required by the master.
•  Perform housekeeping duties which may include cleanliness of own and passenger accommodation, stairways, and other areas of the vessel.
• Doing routine maintenance of the vessel and its equipment.
• Maintaining own safety and security and that of the other persons, vessel and its equipment, cargo, and environment whilst employed on-board.
• Undertaking other duties commensurate with the level of the post as may be reasonably required from time to time.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Working towards level 2 Seafarer apprenticeships, you  will be training on site and remotely. Training will take place one day a week.

• Functional Skills in English and maths if required.

You will also obtain the following:

•  Level 2 Award in Maritime Studies: Deck Rating – SQA Code GC6K 62.
• Level 2 Certificate in Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Deck) – SQA Code GK54 54.
• Level 2 STCW Personal Survival Techniques Level 2 STCW Basic Firefighting and Fire prevention.
• Level 2 STCW Elementary first aid.
• Level 2 STCW Proficiency in security awareness.
• Level 2 STCW Personal safety and social responsibility.
• Level 2 MNTB Entry into Enclosed Spaces.
• Level 2 MCA approved Steering Certificate.
• Level 2 Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Certificate.
• Level 2 Proficiency in Designated Security Duties.
• Level 2 MCA approved Navigational Watch Rating Certificate (including 2 months statutory sea time).
• Level 2 MCA approved Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Certificate (including 6 months statutory sea time).

Things to consider

Capable of obtaining an ENG1 Unrestricted Medical Certificate including eyesight examination. An offer of apprenticeship will be made after obtaining ENG1 certificate.
You must hold valid UK passport, undergo security checks.
Due to being on a military role and long periods at sea you must be 17 years old or older.
